Mayor’s Council on Neighborhoods Meeting – May 2015

Tuesday, May 12, 2015, the Mayor’s Council on Neighborhoods (MCN) held their seventh official meeting. Thanks to the Rochester Area Foundation for the excellent meeting space and to Mayor Brede for his support of the group.

Representatives from the Slatterly, Sunnyside, Historic SW, Eastside, Parkway, Friends of Indian Heights, Washington, NW Neighbors, and Downtown Neighborhood Associations were in attendance. The focus of this meeting was to hear about and discuss efforts of the MCN work group that was given the charge at the February MCN meeting to explore possible ways to increase and encourage citizen participation working with city government and departments. Two main focus areas were discussed.

• “A Citizen’s Guide” is a simplified guideline created for neighborhoods who are new to working with the City Council and the Planning & Zoning Commission. The final document will be posted on the City’s and RNeighbors’ websites and available at Council meetings.
• The MCN work group did research on different cities who are comparable in size to Rochester and how neighborhoods in those cities positively work with development. Out of these the goal of “creating effective, deliberative and sustainable public participation practices as the City of Rochester undergoes rapid economic development and demographic change” was created and discussed.

Mission To strengthen connections between neighborhood leaders and give neighborhoods a collective voice.

The group will meet at the Rochester Area Foundation every two months, Tuesday, 5:30‐7 pm, unless a special meeting is called.
