Spring 2013 Community Tree Planting
On Saturday, May 5, 2012, over 500 neighbors, youth, and other community volunteers worked together to plant 1,200 trees in one morning, a record number of trees planted in one morning for the state of Minnesota and the RNeighborWoods program.
The city’s boulevard tree spaces are currently over half empty and each year 500-900 boulevard trees are removed to disease or damage. We need your help to add more community trees to this neighborhood. RPU Arbor Day Celebration April 26
Partnering Sponsors – Rochester Public Utilities (RPU), Maier Tree & Lawn, and Rochester Park & Recreation hold an Annual Arbor Day Celebration on the last Friday in April every year.
The celebration is held between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. in downtown Rochester and is open to the public. The festivities include live music, lunch, free trees, various vendors, and many family activities. Winners of the elementary school Arbor Day Poster Contest are also announced.

2013 Mayor’s Urban Forestry Volunteer Award Winners
Sponsored by the RNeighborWoods program, the Mayor’s Urban Forestry Volunteer Award was created to recognize amazing citizens, for outstanding contributions to Rochester’s urban forest. There are three categories for these awards including adult, youth and business.

These awards will be presented by Mayor Brede at the Environmental Awareness Month Proclamation, Tuesday, April 2, 10 am in the Rotunda of the Government Center.

Jason works at Mayo Clinic in a laboratory by day, but has been an advocate for neighborhood trees since 2008 when he moved to Rochester.

2013 Spring Tree Grant Application Now Available
Photo: On a very drippy Saturday afternoon, October 13, the RNeighborWoods team helped the Viking Village neighborhood plant 25 trees each, as part of their Neighborhood Tree Grant.
Trees make good neighbors.
Since its creation in 2004, RNeighborWoods has organized 4101 volunteers to plant 5160 trees on Rochester boulevards. These trees provide multiple ecological and other public benefits including reducing Rochester’s carbon footprint. Once again the City of Rochester, RPU and RNeighbors is offering two grants for winning neighborhoods to receive free boulevard trees.

Dr. Smiley’s sessions will examine his new research about important tree risk information. This information is vital to the modern arborist – it pertains to anyone that removes, prunes, consults and climbs trees. Dr. Smiley has been a leader in arboricultural research for decades and these lectures are what arborists and foresters should not miss!
Dr. Kane’s sessions will look at the application of risk assessment.

2012 Fall RNeighborWoods Community Tree Planting
Once again neighbors rolled up their sleeves this fall and planted trees, celebrating the great green community-building national NeighborWoods month. Thanks to over 280 volunteers, this fall 360 trees have found homes in Rochester neighborhood boulevards.
September 29, was a gorgeous fall day and over 250 Rochester neighbors came out to plant 330 boulevard trees in the neighborhoods surrounding Fox Valley Drive SW. We started a little after 9 am, all of the trees were in the ground by 11 am. Thanks to each of you who came out to lend a hand. What a difference your volunteerism has made to this neighborhood street!
