The below information was writen by the Rochester City Forester, Jacob Ryg. For additional information call 507-328-2515 or email Jacob Ryg.

A citizen has brought this flyer to my attention and I thought I’d share some information with you.

  1. Even if a tree company claims to be licensed and insured – always ask for a copy and a list of references – or call your city forester to find out.
  2. When done ethically, harvesting trees for lumber production is an important and viable part of our economy but make sure you know what you’re getting into. A reputable company does not drive around the city knocking on doors looking for work – or offers to buy your walnut trees. Walnut lumber prices are very high at this time…don’t let yourself get ripped off.
  3. It is true that most lumber mills will not take urban grown trees because of the potential metal or defects in the trees. The exception is when the trees are extremely valuable and worth the risk of blade damage.
  4. Protect yourself and neighbors trees. In my opinion these trees are far more valuable alive and standing providing the numerous benefits urban trees give us.
  5. Unfortunately this type of “walnut search” goes on almost every year in Rochester and surrounding communities – although it is not illegal, it is unethical.
