On October 2, 2015, we’ll be celebrating Rochester neighborhoods at our annual OAKtoberfest fundraiser. We couldn’t put on this event without our incredible event sponsors and we wanted you to learn more about them. Introducing Custom Alarm. Some of their amazing staff is pictured above.

How long have you been in business?

Custom Alarm has been in business since 1968.

What is the location of your business?

We are located at 1661 Greenview Drive SW in Rochester MN.

What have you done to give back to the community in which your business resides?

We live and work in the community so giving back is part of the Custom Alarm way of life. Which is no surprise because Leigh J. Johnson (founder and chairman) and Melissa Brinkman (CEO) are very involved in the Rochester community and surrounding area. They both volunteer their time on a variety of boards and support many organizations, personally and professionally.

Custom Alarm encourages staff to participate in local events, serve on boards, and to be active members in the community. Custom Alarm has also been a Minnesota Keystone Program member since 1993. A program that recognizes companies who contribute at least 2% and up to 5% of their pre-tax earnings to the community.

Our Custom Cares committee is made up of employees who want to help make a difference. They truly believe in the causes and work that many non-profits and other organizations do on a daily basis. In fact one member of our Custom Cares Committee is also an executive board member for RNeighbors and serves on Rochester’s National Night Out Committee.

Some of the things we have done this year have been open house backyard barbeques, trick-or-treat for the kids and daycare centers in the area at our office, we let different associations use our conference room for monthly meetings at no cost, and we give to many causes and events throughout the year.

What makes your business special?

We have the only UL Listed Monitoring Response Center in Rochester, MN. We are also a certified Women Owned Business and this year we won the 2015 Regional Dream Big Small Business of the Year Award.

What is something that not many people know about your business? Or do you have any random fun facts about your business?

A lot of people think that Custom Alarm can only provide intrusion security for residential customers. However, we can provide so much more then that!

We can help protect homes from water damage, give you remote control access to your system from anywhere a cell or internet signal reaches, we can provide you with a discount on your home owners insurance with a monitored smoke alarm, and we can also offer you “peace of mind” because our monitoring response center is UL listed and located right here in Rochester, MN.

Why do you think neighborhoods are important to Rochester?

Neighborhood associations are very important to Rochester as they help create a sense of unity, which is essential for any size community. It’s great to see all the different neighborhoods working together to create a common goal, making Rochester a better place to live and without neighborhoods that goal would just be a dream. Especially since Rochester is somewhat of a transient community and is growing. Having neighborhood families informally creating little pockets of inclusivity helps people feel a sense of community and strengthens their relationships and overall experience in Rochester.

What are you most excited for at OAKtoberfest?

We are excited to participate and sponsor OAKtoberfest for the first time and see the success of the event. However, in addition to the socializing we are also very excited to challenge some brave souls in hammerslaugen.
