What is Geothermal Energy?

The earth’s interior provides heat energy from nature.  This energy is called geothermal energy and yields power we can use which does not pollute the surrounding environment.  Today we drill holes into geothermal reservoirs to release hot water to the surface.  We use the hot water and/or steam to generate electricity in geothermal power plants.  The United States produces 2,700 megawatts of electricity from geothermal energy.  This is equivalent to burning 60 million barrels of oil each year.
