About Environmental Health

The natural world around us provides us with basic services, such as food and water; regulating services, such as flood and disease control; and supporting services, such as nutrient cycling that maintains the conditions for life on Earth.  Changes to these natural services, as a consequence of changes in the environment, affect human well-being through impacts on food security and other basic materials that sustain life and good health.

The world’s poorest people depend primarily on environmental goods-and-services for their livelihoods, which make them particularly sensitive and vulnerable to environmental changes.  Even more importantly, many communities in both developing and developed countries derive their income from environmental resources, which include fisheries, non-timber forest products and wildlife.  When these environmental resources are threatened, the general livelihoods of the population are also threatened.  Browse the materials below to see how your health and well-being can be affected by harmful changes to our environmental resources, as well as what changes you can make to promote a more healthy surrounding environment in your area.
