2012 Fall RNeighborWoods Community Tree Planting

2012 Fall RNeighborWoods Community Tree Planting

Once again neighbors rolled up their sleeves this fall and planted trees, celebrating the great green community-building national NeighborWoods month. Thanks to over 280 volunteers, this fall 360 trees have found homes in Rochester neighborhood boulevards.

September 29, was a gorgeous fall day and over 250 Rochester neighbors came out to plant 330 boulevard trees in the neighborhoods surrounding Fox Valley Drive SW. We started a little after 9 am, all of the trees were in the ground by 11 am. Thanks to each of you who came out to lend a hand. What a difference your volunteerism has made to this neighborhood street!

This tree planting was funded by a grant from the DNR specifically to plant city trees, creating a corridor of boulevards trees to connect two parks. Trees were planted from Younge Park to Baihly Meadows Park. Long-standing partner in our tree plantings, The Olmsted County Youth Commission did not disappoint turning out over 100 local high school student planters.

We continued our celebration of NeighborWoods month on October 13, planting 25 trees in the Viking Village neighborhood. In the pouring rain over 30 neighbors planted their winning Neighborhood Tree Grant award of 25 trees. We’ve been told that each neighbor “adopted” these city trees and are watching over them and watering them as needed.

Thanks to our partners and sponsors who made this event a reality. You can check out exactly what local and national businesses and organizations did what as well as check out the t-shirt graphic on our website. Special thanks to the national organizations the Alliance for Community Trees who provided us with a mini-grant to help pay for the tye-dyed t-shirts that were given out to our tree-rific volunteers.
