Mayor Brede’s 2011 Environmental Awareness Month Proclamation

Mayor Brede will kick off Earth Month at his Environmental Awareness Month Proclamation, Friday, April 1, 9 am at Rotunda of the Government Center. This Proclamation celebrates the many positive environmental events occurring in Rochester this spring including the city-wide litter pick up campaign “Let’s Make Rochester A Litter Bit Better”,  Quarry Hill Nature Center’s Earth Day FANfair and the 2011 Mayor’s Urban Forestry Volunteer Award Winners.

2011 Environmental Awareness Month Proclamation

WHEREAS,

Earth Day is Friday, April 22, 2011 and Arbor Day is Friday, April 29, 2011; and

WHEREAS,

Earth Day and Arbor Day inspire many organizations to host environmental events to help raise awareness of environmental issues during the month of April; and

WHEREAS,

several environmental events have been planned in Rochester during the month of April; and

WHEREAS,

The Mayor’s Urban Forestry Volunteer Awards are presented to two volunteers and one business for branching out and helping to grow Rochester’s urban forest working with the RNeighborWoods program, April 1, 9 am.

WHEREAS,

RNeighborWoods will hold Citizen Forester Training for people of all ages on Saturday, April 9th  from 8:00 am to 2pm at Quarry Hill Nature Center; and

WHEREAS,

The Rochester Public Library will show the children’s film The Lorax on Saturday, April 16th at 10:30am in the Library Auditorium; and

WHEREAS,

The Think Green Fair, on Saturday, April 16, will consist of opportunities for neighbors to gather and learn ways of being more Earth friendly. Music, crafts, demonstrations and local foods are just a part of this celebration of green initiatives and ways of living. 11:00 am-6:00 pm at the Good Food Store, 1001 6th Street Northwest.

WHEREAS,

Citizens will Help Make Rochester A Litter Bit Better! by collecting litter throughout the City between Saturday, April 16th  through Saturday April 23rd; and

WHEREAS,

Rochester Public Utilities and Maier Forest and Tree will sponsor the Annual Arbor Day Celebration on Friday, April 29th in Central Park from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., along with co-sponsors the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources and Rochester Park and Recreation;

WHEREAS,

Quarry Hill Nature Center will host an Earth Day FANfair on Saturday, April 30th with a National Eagle Center Presentation, Family Geo-Cache Adventure, and other fun activities from 11:00 am to 5:00 pm; and

WHEREAS,

RNeighborWoods will sponsor a Community Boulevard Tree Planting event beginning at 9:00 am on Saturday, May 7th, meeting at Watson Sports Complex, 41st Street NW & West River Road. Followed by the Greening of Rochester Picnic;

NOW THEREFORE:

I, Ardell F. Brede, Mayor of the city of Rochester do hereby proclaim the month of April to be

ENVIRONMENTAL AWARENESS MONTH

and all citizens and businesses in Rochester are encouraged to participate in any or all of these events so as to make Rochester a better place to live. 

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the corporate seal of the City of Rochester to be affixed this 1st day of April in the year of Our Lord two thousand ten.
