RColorful Corners Paints a Tree of Knowledge

RColorful Corners Paints a Tree of Knowledge

A brand new mural now graces the streets of a NE Rochester neighborhood.

The Tree of Knowledge street mural was finaly painted after a month of sweltering humidity and storms that caused the paint date to be postponed several times until August 14. Thankfully neighbors and volunteers alike braved the heat throughout the day and brought this mural to life. With their help, this new tree now blooms on the corner of 17th St and 2nd Ave NE, just across the street from the Multicultural Learning Center and down the hill from Kellogg Middle School.

Neighbors enthusiastically enjoyed the painting, several having just moved to the neighborhood. Participants young and old worked into the later hours of the afternoon making sure everything was just right.

The Tree of Knowledge mural was designed by Greg Wimmer with the guidance and input of the Multicultural Learning Center’s students and staff. Like the other street murals in Rochester, this one will be  repainted each year with street paint, in an effort to continue building relationships between neighbors.

This mural was a success because of the neighborly help we received. A big thank you goes out to:

  • SMIF and Valspar who donated 100 gallons of Valspar street paint for all of the street mural paintings in Rochester this season.
  • Greg Wimmer, our artist extraordinaire, who patiently guides our mural painting process.
  • The Multicultural Learning Center who wrote the grant for the mural and was our partner in the effort.
  • Jason Trihey of Dapper Surfaces who allowed us to use his shop to dump the painty water down the drain. This water should not be dumped down city storm drains but instead needs to be disposed of through and inside drain.
  • National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) who brought out donuts.
  • Safety Signs provide the barricades that are required by the City ordinance for blocking off the street.
  • Public Works staff who help clean the pavement with the large street sweeper and deliver these very heavy and cumbersome signs. They make it look easy!
  • The City Traffic Engineer serves on the RColorful Corners committee and gives advice on mural locations and processes.
  • Struves Paint who gave us a discount on black paint that we had to purchase to finish the last mural of the season.
  • Last but not least, Cassie, our RColorful Corners Chair, for all of her hard work in leading the organization for the street mural paintings.
