RColorful Corners in the Historic Southwest Neighborhood

RColorful Corners in the Historic Southwest Neighborhood

RColorful Corners committee member and Historic Southwest Neighborhood Association Board member Jane Townsend was key in bringing about not only the original street mural painting in her neighborhood but also this year’s repainting where over 60 neighbors showed up in force to help.

On Wednesday, July 29, 2009, neighbors and volunteers gathered to repaint the Funky Flower street mural near the Edison Building in the Historic Southwest neighborhood. Last year at the mural painting, a hail storm struck nearly minutes after the last touches of paint had been applied, so the faded mural was in definite need of a touch-up. This time the sunny weather was on our side as about 60 people turned up to lend a hand in brightening up our community. It was great to see such a wide variety of individuals work together to finish the mural.

Special thanks to the Historic Southwest neighborhood association for bringing delicious cookies to the event as well as generating a great volunteer turnout. Thanks also goes to the maintenance staff at the Edison building for providing us with water and a space to clean up. And finally thanks to our artist, Greg Wimmer, and all other supporters of RColorful Corners and RNeighbors.

RColorful Corners is an RNeighbors program that adds color to neighborhoods and increases neighborhood ownership and pride through group projects such as street murals.

Thanks to our sponsors and partners of this grassroots program.

  • Safety Signs
They provided the barricades that are required by the City ordinance for blocking off the street.
  • Sherwin-Williams
This local business donated some really great brushes and tools that have allowed painters to make neighborhoods a little more colorful.
  • Summer of Service (SOS)
This Community Education program goes door to door with flyers inviting the neighbors prior to the painting and has not only helped with painting of the mural projects but also power-washes the street the day prior to painting.
  • City of Rochester
The City Traffic Engineer serves on the RColorful Corners committee and gives advice on mural locations and processes.
  • Neighborhood Association members
Each neighborhood has representation on the RColorful Corners committee and engages their neighborhood to participate in the project.
  • Pandera Bread
Is an active supporter of RNeighbors’ projects and often supplies bagels and coffee for participants.
