Tree Care Advisor Class

Primary Instructors:

Gary Johnson and David Hanson, University of Minnesota, Department of Forest Resources. Angie Gupta, University of Minnesota Extension. Jacob Ryg, City of Rochester, Forestry Department.

The core course training consists of a) 30 classroom hours, including b)one, six-hour Saturday session, c)three homework assignments, d)one, 5-minute “speak-out”, and e)training/reference manual. Participants that successfully complete the training are eligible to take the Minnesota Certified Tree Inspector examination at no extra charge.

All classroom sessions will be held in Rochester at the Olmsted County Extension Office, and will be held from 6-9 p.m. The Saturday field session site in Winona is to be determined, but will be held from 8:30 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. with a one hour lunch break.

Cost of the course is $98, payable to “University of Minnesota.” Minimum number of participants required to conduct training is 15. Communicate with Gary Johnson (johns054@umn.edu) or Dave Hanson (hanso355@umn.edu) for application forms.

Sept 30th: Program Introduction
Oct 7th: Site analyses and plant recommendations. Homework assignment 1.
Oct 14th: Soils, watering, mulching and amendments. Review of homework 1.
Oct 21st: Tree/shrub anatomy, morphology and physiology for tree huggers. Tree/shrub identification exercise. Homework assignment 2.
Oct 28th: Protecting trees from storm/construction damage. Review homework 2.
Oct 31st: Saturday session in Winona.
Nov 4th: Diagnosing bugs, crud, and abiotic problems. Homework assignment 3.
Nov 11th: Identifying trees and shrubs after leaf-fall. Speak-outs.
Nov 18th: Speak-outs. Review homework assignment 3. Certificates of completion.
