On Saturday, July 23, we’re inviting artists of all ages to take part in a city-wide Chalk the Walk Festival, adding colorful art throughout Rochester sidewalks, cultivating joy and positivity. Partners in this effort include the City of Rochester, the Southeastern Minnesota Poets, and RNeighbors.

Chalk the Walk will include pavement poetry and sidewalk art done by neighbors, as well as chalk murals across the city created  by professional artists. Through these grants, local artists and poets will showcase their talents around the theme of “Creating Memorable Connections!”

Chalk the Walk Grants

Opportunity for local artists to create sidewalk chalk murals for payment in a Rochester, Minnesota, neighborhood. This is a competitive process as only four grants will be awarded.

  • Applicants must be artists, 17 years and older to qualify for grant and must reside or work in Rochester.
  • Grant applications are due Friday, July 15, at 5 pm, and should be emailed.
  • Applicants will be notified by Sunday, July 17.
  • Work to be completed on the pre-determined location for the Chalk the Walk Festival by Saturday, July 23 (Sunday, July 24 rain date).
  • $300 for accepted sidewalk chalk murals and $100 for accepted poems to be paid upon receipt of completion form.
  • Supplies will be purchased by RNeighbors and made available for artists at the Development Services & Infrastructure Center (DSIC), 4001 West River Pkwy NW, including: assorted colors of soft pastels, sponges, baby wipes, and fixative.
  • Theme: “Creating Memorable Connections!”
  • Sidewalk surface area: 4 ft x4 ft, or 16 square ft total.
  • Application must include a completed W-9 and 4 samples of past artwork.
